Why is agave a “low glycemic sweetener” and how is that better for me?
Agave is very high in fructose, the same natural sugar found in fruits, vegetables, beets, and sweet potatoes. Even though it is sugary, natural fructose is much more gentle on blood sugar levels compared to processed sweeteners such as corn syrup or table sugar. This is because intake of fructose actually stimulates the secretion of insulin, which prevents sudden surges or falls in blood sugar levels. The Glycemic Index is a ranking of foods in relationship to their effect on blood sugar levels (see below) and agave is relatively low on the index.
Not all sweet nutrients are harmful for our health. Fructose is such a nutrient, and is considered safe even for diabetics when used in moderation and in combination with other low-glycemic foods. Fructose is the sweetest of natural sugars, so very little is required to achieve sweetness, thus reducing calorie intake.
What is the Glycemic Index?
Here’s a helpful explanation about Glycemic Index from the website of our friends at Wholesome Sweeteners, a company that is dedicated to organic and natural sweeteners:
Glycemic Index is a ranking system for carbohydrates based on their effect on blood glucose levels. The glycemic index of a food is a measurement of the changes in our bodies' blood sugar in the two hours after we eat something. Foods that metabolize quickly, flooding our system with carbs/energy, are generally referred to as high glycemic foods; food that metabolize slowly are low glycemic foods. Low GI foods generally offer our bodies a more sustained, slow release of carbs/energy. Some believe that low GI foods are especially useful for people monitoring their blood sugar. The Glycemic Index is a general guide rather than an absolute reference, and is often reported as a range rather than a fixed number. While the Glycemic Index suggests a certain food's effect on our system, it is influenced by other foods already in our system and our individual metabolic rate since we all metabolize things differently. Each of us will have a different glycemic response to a food.

Are your products suitable for diabetics?
People who live with diabetes must constantly monitor the status of their blood sugar levels and manage their diets and lifestyles accordingly. Very often, people with diabetes are interested in low-glycemic foods to help support their diets. If you have any questions about using our products as part of a diabetic eating plan, then you should consult with your dietician or physician.
What does “Psalm 34:3” mean on your package?
Psalm 34:3 reads “Dwell in the land and do good works”. These words reflect our mission to support organic agriculture, create a sustainable business and be responsible stewards of the planet we all share.
Who certifies that your products are organic?
All of our products are certified organic by Quality Assurance International (QAI), one of the largest and most well-established third-party certifiers in the organic products industry.
Are you a green company?
We consider our total ecological impact and the health of the earth in all of our business decisions. We are not perfect by any means and we are always looking for ways to become better and more conscious environmental stewards.
Where Can I Find Your Products?
We have several items that are just being introduced at select Whole Foods stores in northern California. Nowadays, each Whole Foods store is stocked a little differently than the others, so if you can not find our products at your local Whole Foods, please ask the store to carry it. The store’s perishables buyer can order Potter products very easily from the primary distributor that services Whole Foods (a company called UNFI; they’ll be amazed if you tell them that!). One request from an organic-food-loving consumer like you is more powerful than dozens of phone calls or emails from us. We appreciate your help!
We'd love to hear from you to answer any questions you have about our products and our company.
