Good Works

Stewardship and sustainability are the guideposts for everything we do. That's why we get our dairy products from small local farms, where cows graze freely on organic green pastures.

About

Who are the Potters?

Potter Family Organics was founded in 2006 as Potter Family Farms by Travis Potter and his wife Heidi. As parents they understood the importance of feeding their family well while also finding products that were yummy enough to please young palates. Plus, they shared a lifelong concern for responsible farming and healthy living.

With the help of Travis’ uncle, Terry Potter, plus a larger “family” of talented people, they began the long, entrepreneurial journey of building an organic foods company. Their mission was to produce healthy and delicious organic items that would satisfy families everywhere.

With Travis’ lifelong experience in livestock, ranching, and meat processing, they initially focused on developing natural and organic meat products. Their product ideas soon grew to include organic dairy items, which is where the bulk of their opportunities lay thanks to a partnership with College of the Sequoias (CoS) in Visalia, California. The college had an unused dairy processing plant that was meant to someday become a practical teaching facility. The Potter team took over the plant and spent two years refurbishing it. Then they spent many moons crafting and testing recipes for an amazingly yummy line of organic Yogurts, Smoothies, Puddings, Creamers, and Frozen Yogurt Mixes.

Now the Potter Family Organics vision is becoming reality, and our products are available at Whole Foods Markets in Northern and Southern California plus Arizona. You can also find Potter products at many independent organic retailers in the northwest, southwest, and throughout California.

Our Ingredients

EggsMany people today are desiring a simpler life, and that means eating simple, fresh foods. Shoppers are paying more attention to how their food was grown and the practices of the company selling it. We're glad about that, because purity is our passion. Every one of the lovely ingredients in our products is chosen through careful research into its source. From organic Tahitian vanilla to rich, creamy organic milk, we apply the same rigorous standards of sustainability, stewardship, and quality.

What does Organic mean?

Some people still think "organic" means "hippie food that tastes like cardboard." Nothing could be further from the truth. Certified Organic means the food is truly 100% natural, pure, and safe: while organic foods are grown or raised under strict sanitation codes, they are free of pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Organic dairy farmers and ranchers must raise their cows on certified organic pasture, use only certified organic feed, and use no chemicals, hormones, or antibiotics on their animals.

eating yogurtYou may ask: don't antibiotics protect dairy cows? The bulk of antibiotics in the dairy industry are used to prevent disease and hasten growth. However, both the World Health Organization and the American Medical Association have stated that antibiotics should never be used on healthy livestock to ward off disease or promote growth. Overuse of antibiotics has caused pathogens to mutate and become resistant to the medicine; where before they were fought off by healthy immune systems, they are now deadly and getting deadlier. When a dairy is maintained in harmony with nature, disease is minimized.

Non-Confinement Farming

Every cow deserves to live happily, moving and mooing naturally rather than penned up and standing for hours on stinky mud or cold concrete. Potter Family Organics works only with family farmers who respect the land and animals that serve us.

This means that in addition to grazing on certified organic pastures, the animals breathe fresh, clean air, instead of fumes from their own waste and grow naturally without pain and deformities caused by unnatural breeding for fast growth. Wouldn’t you rather consume food from happy, healthy critters?

In partnership with College of the Sequoias, the Potter's technical know-how is shared with CoS students as part of the California Dairy Products Training Institute. This program is designed to provide hands-on knowledge and experience to help grow the organic dairy farmers and dairy technicians of the future.
